Episode #3 – Facebook and Business Pages

by SuzAnn on April 30, 2010

Welcome to Episode 3 of Digital Divas.TV. This week we are talking about our experiences with Facebook, and more specifically, Facebook Business Pages.

Running time: 26 minutes 47 seconds Sham-A-Lama!

The big news with Facebook lately is the change from the Facebook “Become a Fan” button to “I Like” button.

Cori:

  • Uses Facebook mainly for personal connections.
  • She only friends people that she has met in person.
  • For business, Cori mainly turns to Linked In and Twitter.
  • Though Cori admits she hasn’t done much with her New Video Monday Fanpage, she receives a weekly notice from FB that informs her that she receives 350-500 hits per week.

Louise: (audio only due to technical difficulties)

  • Joins us from down under this week. A true Diva, Louise calls in at midnight from Australia to join the chat.
  • She uses Facebook to link with her MarkettoMouth blog to her personal FB page.
  • Louise opted not to go the Fan Page direction because she is branding her own name and not a separate brand.

Julie: (audio only due to technical difficulties)

  • This popular Diva has a mix of professional, personal and networking contacts on her personal page.
  • She says she’s at a point where she needs to think about who she is linked to. Some people have used her personal page as a place to mine her contacts.
  • Julie found Facebook a handy tool when she relocated from Australia to the USA, to stay connected with her friends back home and to connect with new people
  • She used Facebook a lot during a recent personal sabbatical and found along the way it became an avenue for her to discover her personal authenticity and self expression, while she was not restricted by who she represented workwise
  • Julie shared her powerful experience with this in an article she wrote Social Networking as a Path to Spiritual Growth

SuzAnn:

  • SuzAnn uses Facebook for personal use with some networking connections. She keeps away from mixing too much personal with business.
  • From a business perspective, she says FB is changing things often and businesses have to keep on top of those changes.
  • She notes that advertising agencies were unofficially notified back in March that Fan Pages would be changing. According to the blog post, people are twice as likely to click on “I Like” over “Become a Fan” because there is less ‘emotional risk’.
  • SuzAnn recommends that people set up business pages only if they have something to say. She also advises business owners and organizations to keep engagement going with discussions, and by inviting customers to become part of their brand.

Kathy:

  • Kathy uses FB for personal use as well as business through her Fan pages, Travel Dragon and The Dragon’s Path.
  • Her Fan pages receive about 700 visits per week with little effort on her part.
  • There are a lot of changes evolving in FB like sharing links, features and functions and it’s difficult for small businesses to navigate these options. Most people don’t even know that you can have a customized landing page.
  • Kathy says it’s important to have a presence on FB, but you really want to make sure to interact with fans that post; otherwise they feel that they’re in an empty room.
  • Also, remember people are reading things but not necessarily commenting, especially in the Baby Boomer market.
  • Tip on Security Settings: Make sure you look at your privacy settings. : You may want to turn off the ability for your fans to post links because they may be soliciting your fans.
  • Security settings. FB isn’t doing a good job on educating people and is changing the rules often. There is an incredible need for basic training and tutorials.
  • When you log into Facebook – look at all of your privacy settings. Play around with that because you can decide who you want to see your information. You probably want to be part of search engines to find you as a business but if you’re coming in on a personal level- you may want to turn everything off until you feel more comfortable with how the interface works.
